Botox? Filler? Fat Grafting? Oh my!

Deciding which cosmetic procedure is right for you can be a difficult choice.  It helps to research the procedure before you step into the doctor’s office.  We hope the information below will arm you with the facts you need to make an informed decision!

BOTOX:

Botox or botulinum toxin type A, is injected in specific areas to block the nerves that cause muscles to contract.  It is most commonly used in the area between the eyebrows, the area outside of the eyes known as crow’s feet, and the facial creases in the forehead.  It can also be used to reduce perspiration, alleviate migraines and to bring balance to the face.  You might consider having botox if the deep creases on your face make you have a tired, sad or angry appearance.  Both women and men are candidates for botox.  In fact, men in increasing numbers, are deciding to have botox treatments.  They view it as a way to help reboot their career by minimizing wrinkles and in effect, gaining a more youthful appearance.  Botox can give you a well rested, refreshed appearance.  Botox injections are relatively painless with little to no downtime.  Full results can take up to 5 days to see.   The results can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.  If botox is not injected correctly it may result in a droopy eye.  Does it sound like botox is right for you?  You aren’t alone.  According to the American Society for Aethestic Plastic Surgery, or ASAPS, 2,915,865 women and 342,048 men had botox in 2012.

Fillers:

Fillers can be injected into the contours of your face, the nasolabial or marionette lines of the face, in the neck, lips and in your hands.  Fillers add volume to the  face, plump wrinkles, as well as, fill in scars.  Fillers are temporary and results can last up to one year.  Dr.Cohn uses several different brands of fillers, Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and Sculptra, and will help determine the one that will give you the best result.  For the most part, there is little to no downtime and results are immediate.  Some patients experience bruising and swelling around the filled areas.  According to the ASPAS 1,497,811 women and 125,535 men had a cosmetic filler treatment in 2012.  Think it might be time to add this with a botox treatment?

Fat Injection/Grafting:

Fat injection/grafting is a more permanent solution than botox or filler.  It involves taking your own fat from an area  with excess fat and injecting it in your face or hands to add volume and fill wrinkles.  It provides a natural look and reduces the chance of allergic reaction because it is from your own body.  You must have an area with excess fat in order to be a candidate for fat grafting.  You also need to have good blood circulation, in good medical condition, and non-smoking.  Although fat injection/grafting is the most expensive option of the three, it is an excellent option because of it long-lasting results.  Potentially, fat injection/grafting could save you money in the long run.  Recovery time for this procedure can be 1-2 weeks.  According to the ASPAS, 66,986 women and 4,859 men in 2012, underwent fat injection/grafting in 2012.
