Brow Lift Surgery

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, collagen production decreases, and our entire facial structure begins to sag. These changes can result in a sagging brow or deep creases in the forehead. The sagging skin of the brows can contribute to an angry or tired expression, with forehead wrinkles making you seem more disgruntled or disagreeable than you are. Cosmetic injectables may help slightly, but brow lift surgery promises the best results for comprehensive rejuvenation.

What Are the Benefits of Brow Lift Surgery?

A brow lift, or a forehead lift, is a surgical process that can create a more youthful and rested appearance to the upper face and eyes.

Brow lift surgery is a highly individualized procedure that may be a good option if you are bothered by exaggerated facial expression lines or other signs of aging in the brow and forehead region. A brow lift can provide long-lasting, rejuvenating results by lifting the eyebrows to a more youthful, open position and smoothing creases throughout the forehead.

What Can a Brow Lift Treat?

A brow lift procedure can:

  • Reposition low or sagging eyebrows
  • Improve frown lines
  • Minimize creases in the forehead or to the bridge of the nose
  • Open the eyes for an elegant, alert appearance
  • Smooth the forehead for a revitalized look

Am I a Candidate for Brow Lift Surgery?

The success of your brow lift surgery depends on the quality of your participation in the initial consultation at the Birmingham Cohn Plastic Surgery Office. You will need to be prepared to discuss why you want brow lift surgery, your personal medical history, drug allergies, use of medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and any family history of disease.

Note: Success in brow lift surgery is greater if you are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations for your surgery and potential outcomes. Brow lift surgery does not significantly change the appearance of your face. In some cases, a brow lift is combined with an eyelid lift procedure to the upper and lower eyelids.

What Is the Brow Lift Procedure?

The Initial Consultation

Dr. Cohn will perform a physical examination and take detailed measurements of your individual physical attributes. Photographs may be taken for your medical record. At that point, Dr. Cohn will be prepared to discuss your surgical options, recommend a course of treatment, and discuss the use of anesthesia during your brow lift procedure.

The consultation consists of a thorough discussion to get a sense of what an anticipated final appearance might look like. He will be happy to assist with recommendations while using your personal goals to guide final decision making.

Preparing For Brow Lift Surgery

Prior to your surgery, you may be asked to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, receive a prescription for certain medications or adjust your current medications, stop smoking, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding. Special instructions will cover what to do on the day of surgery, what post-operative care entails, and when to schedule a follow-up.

Your brow lift surgery can be performed through a number of techniques. Your initial consultation with Dr. Cohn in Birmingham will determine the ideal design for your brow lift.

The Brow Lift Procedure

  • The Open Brow Lift: One continuous incision is made at the ear level and goes up around the hairline.
  • The Endoscopic Brow Lift: Small incisions are made to the scalp and a thin endoscopic camera is inserted. A separate device is then inserted into a neighboring incision to make the necessary adjustments.
  • A Direct Brow Lift: This procedure requires an incision above the brow hair or in the forehead to reposition the eyebrow.

The specific technique will be determined before the procedure and customized based on your physical anatomy, the desired outcome, and Dr. Cohn’s expert opinion.

As part of the brow lift closing procedure, removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives, and surgical tape are often used.

What Is Recovery Like After Brow Lift Surgery?

Although many factors are involved in your recovery time, you will likely experience an initial post-surgical recovery period of 24-48 hours, which may include soreness, swelling, or discomfort. You may also require a reduced-activity period of a few days. You will likely experience soreness and swelling during recovery for a few weeks. Exercise and regular activity can resume at Dr. Cohn’s direction. Most patients must take a few days off work unless their job requires vigorous activity. In this case, patients may need longer.

Following all of the doctor’s post-surgery instructions is crucial to the success of your surgery. Surgical incisions should not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during healing. He will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions following brow lift surgery, which medications to take, how to reduce the risk of infection, and when to make a follow-up appointment. If any issues or questions arise, please contact our office.

How Long Does Brow Lift Results Last?

The results of your brow lift are intended to be long-lasting. While no plastic surgical procedure can stop the natural aging process, a brow lift will greatly improve the appearance of the brows and forehead. Many patients benefit from combining their brow lift with another facial procedure, such as a facelift, to support facial harmony.

Brow Lift Surgery FAQ

  • The decision to have brow lift surgery is extremely personal and not without risk. As with any surgical procedure, risks of a brow lift may include bleeding, bruising, or difficulty healing.

Dr. Cohn will thoroughly review and explain the risks associated with your surgery. After you fully understand the procedure, you will be asked to sign consent forms.

  • As with any elective surgery, the cost of brow lift surgery is a consideration for many patients. Cost may include a surgeon’s fee, hospital or surgical facility costs, anesthesia fees, medication prescriptions, and any associated medical tests. Birmingham Cohn Plastic Surgery proudly offers patient financing plans, so be sure to ask if such a plan interests you.

  • Each brow lift procedure is performed under anesthesia; Dr. Cohn will discuss your options during your consultation. In any case, you will feel no pain throughout the procedure itself. Most patients feel the most discomfort following their brow lift on days 1-3 postoperative. This discomfort can be managed by over-the-counter pain medications or through prescription pain management.
