Will Breast Augmentation Surgery Affect Breastfeeding After Pregnancy?

Many women considering breast augmentation wonder if breast implants will affect breastfeeding in the future. Fortunately, breast augmentation does not injure the actual breast gland in any way that would be expected to prevent breastfeeding. However, breast surgery can affect milk production in some patients, depending on several factors, such as how the surgery is technically performed and how the breast tissue, ducts, and nerves respond after surgery.

Should I Wait Until After Pregnancy to Get a Breast Augmentation?

If you’re planning on starting a family soon, it may be better to wait so that post-partum changes in your breasts can be taken into account. Pregnancy comes with weight changes and breastfeeding, which can alter breast characteristics, skin elasticity, and nipple position. It’s recommended to wait up to six months after completion of lactation before undergoing breast augmentation so the breast tissue can normalize and surgical results can be most predictable.

Choosing breast surgery after pregnancy and completion of breastfeeding allows Dr. Cohn to evaluate your breasts once they have reached a more stable shape. However, if pregnancy is years away or even uncertain, breast augmentation can be a reasonable option. The best timing depends on your family planning considerations, personal body goals, individual anatomy, and lifestyle.

Do Breast Implants Prevent the Ability to Breastfeed?

No, breast implants do not prevent a woman’s body from breastfeeding. Women would be expected to successfully breastfeed following breast augmentation regardless of whether the implant is placed above or below the pectoralis muscle. Whether a woman is able to produce a full milk supply is not related to the actual placement of the breast implant, and some women need to supplement breastfeeding even if they have not undergone breast augmentation surgery.

That said, there are some reasons why women may struggle with breastfeeding following breast surgery. There can be a higher risk for breastfeeding difficulties if:

  • Nerves or milk ducts were affected during surgery
  • A periareolar incision was performed, putting an incision closer to the actual nipple region
  • The patient had limited natural breast tissue before surgery

The nerves and milk duct architecture around the nipple and areola are essential for breastfeeding, so patients concerned about breastfeeding should ask Dr. Cohn which incision is appropriate for their anatomy and goals.

Breast Augmentation and Breastfeeding FAQs

Is it safe to breastfeed with breast implants?

Yes, women can safely breastfeed with breast implants. Implants themselves do not affect the quality or safety of breast milk.

Can pregnancy change my breast augmentation results?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding do affect breast augmentation results, as they can change breast size, shape, volume, and skin elasticity over time. For women whose breasts have been negatively impacted following pregnancy, they can choose to undergo a breast implant revision, a breast implant replacement, or a breast lift to restore their desired shape.

Can I pump breast milk if I have breast implants?

Patients will be able to pump breast milk with breast implants. The biggest concern is milk production, not the pump itself. If a patient has reduced milk supply after breast surgery, pumping can be helpful. Additionally, women are always encouraged to partner and consult with their OB/GYN, pediatrician, or a lactation consultant, if helpful.
